ROY MAYORGA ANSWERS YOUR QUESTIONS

YOU asked, ROY answered

Currently touring with Stone Sour on the UPROAR Festival, Roy took a few minutes out of his crazy schedule to answer questions from our Facebook fans. Thanks for the questions - and Roy, thanks for answering!

Harley Mizzi asked
What is your favourite cymbal to hit?

My 22" Paragon crash and my signature prototype cymbal, the "Anvil Ride" (SABIAN sidebar: this is an extra, extra heavy 24” Hand Hammered Ride)

Yinx Drumholic asked
Who is your favorite drummer?

John Bonham (I have many but he's at the top of my list)

Tommy V Cooper asked
Roy! You're the biggest influence I have - What are the best drumheads to use in your opinion? And how can I get that big deep sound you get on your kit? Thanks!

I like to use Evans G2 coated on top with G1 clear on the bottom for toms. On the snare I use G2 coated on top, 300 hazy on bottom and bass drum I use EMAD 2 with an EQ3 resonant. The combination with those heads and DW VLT shells gives you a big warm punch and low end with lots of sustain. Also tuning your drums a little higher than normal makes the shells react better.

Jacob Friedrich asked
What is the drive or inspiration that keeps you going?

Well, music is my life and it's something that has always been a part of me. Honestly I just love to play and create music...it's my passion. I can definitely see myself doing what I do until I'm old and gray. That thought is my drive.

Adam Russel Robertson asked
Why did you pick Sabian over all of the other cymbal companies?

To me they have the best variety in cymbals and they are sooo durable. What's great about their cymbals is that they're so musical and have so much character. Here is the combination that I currently have on my kit:
15" APX hats and 18"/20" APX solid crashes - they cut just so perfect to where it doesn't interfere with the wall of crash I have coming from the 22" Paragon (my main crash)
22" HH Chinese is just a monster of a cymbal
The APX crashes act as my accent and they cut perfectly over the warmth of the 22" Paragon
...And then there is the 24" Anvil ride which just seals the deal on everything for me. It's a signature prototype that SABIAN and I designed together. That ride is a heavy S.O.B. - it's all attack and no wash...great for rock/metal and cuts through all of the chaos on stage.
It's a very colorful setup for sure and they all sit in their own frequencies. Thanks to Sabian I finally found my sound.
